What are Flatbed Trucks?

  • Dec 29, 2008
  • Post a comment

A flatbed truck is a type of truck, which has an entirely flat body with no sides or roof. Not to be confused with tilt bed or straight trucks the term flatbed refers to the trailer on a semi-trailer or tractor-trailer.

Flatbed trucks allow for quick loading from the sides and back. While often used to transport less fragile items such as construction equipment, these trucks are also available with air ride suspensions to haul sensitive machines such as CNC milling machines, lathes and injection mold machines. To protect machines from the weather many trucking companies provide tarps for an additional charge.

Looking for a machinery mover or rigger in California? Try California Machinery Movers, Erectors and Riggers. This site lists companies that load and unload heavy machinery. Some are setup to do plant relocation's while others are geared toward smaller moves of one to three machines. This is also a good site to check if you are in need of machinery storage or heavy haul trucking as these are additional services that many machinery movers provide.

To find out specific capabilities that these companies can provide such as crane rental or forklifts that can lift in excess of 15,000 lbs. you will need to view there websites or give them a call. Often times if these companies do not have the really heavy capacity equipment, but they will rent it to do the job. Many rigging companies that have been around for years choose to specialty equipment as it is usually well maintained and reduces overhead expenses.

Career - What is a Machinery Mover

A machinery mover, sometimes referred to as a rigger, is as it sounds someone or a company that moves machines. However, these companies and people are not your typical movers. Instead, they generally specialize in moving heavy equipment and machines. Your general moving company does not normally have the equipment or talent to move large pieces of equipment. What this means is that when a company is doing a plant relocation there will be often be two different movers involved. One moving company would handle the office furniture and computer equipment while the other would take care of moving the heavy industrial equipment.

While many machinery moving companies diversify into other industrial services, the core services that these companies focus on are moving machines and equipment, machinery storage and heavy haul trucking.

If you like working working with your hands and don't mind getting dirty, cold and hot working conditions and long hours, a career in machinery moving may be something to consider. It is definitely a job that takes talent, skill and commitment, but can be truly rewarding.
